YMCA set for transition to interim facilities
In fourteen days, the YMCA in Chloride Street will close its doors to the public and transition into two interim buildings to make way for a $4.59 million redevelopment, funded largely through the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Resources for Regions program.
The closure of the YMCA in Chloride Street marks more than 110 years of service to the community. Despite closing in 2006 for six months, YMCA has evolved and grown into a thriving community facility.
YMCA Area Manager Shane Simmons, said the organisation was on track to transition into two interim facilities on 29 September.
"We’re delighted with the progress made so far, particularly at our Oxide Street building which will house most of our existing programs and services. We’re also excited to announce that preparations at the BIU Band Hall in Beryl Street are also progressing well."
The building at 8-10 Oxide Street will provide all of the fitness programs the YMCA offers now including personal training, group fitness and spin as well as a crèche. Zumba programs and a crèche service will run out of the BIU Band Hall.
"We’ve finished the internal walls at Oxide Street, and we’re now starting to fit out the furniture and equipment. The community can check out some of the progress by following us on social media or by visiting our Chloride Street centre to see our information board," said Mr Simmons.
YMCA will close at 8 pm on Friday September 29 and re-open at 5:15 am on Tuesday 3 October at 8-10 Oxide Street.
