Alternative Suspension Students Thrive

30 Aug 2024 - Youth

A three-month follow-up with a student who was previously referred to the Y NSW’s Alternative Suspension program has shown remarkable improvements in their school life and personal development.

Prior to participating in the program, the student had struggled with poor attendance and was at risk of falling behind in their education. The young person also experienced bullying at school which contributed to their disruptive behaviour. Since completing the program, the student has reported significant positive changes both academically and socially.

"The drama at school used to bog me down. Since Alternative Suspension I've learnt how to not care as much about the drama,” AS participant.

The Alternative Suspension program is designed to transform the out-of-school suspension period into an opportunity for personal growth and reintegration into the school community.

"Alternative Suspension is great because it provides young people with the opportunity to connect with Youth Workers in a safe and friendly environment.  It gives young people the opportunity to express themselves and to gain skills and knowledge which are crucial for school and for life outside of the school environment,” explains Youth Program Coordinator, Mim Wasley.

In this student's case, the results have been outstanding. The student now reports no concerns in all areas assessed, a significant turnaround from their previous struggles. They have now returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose and an amazing new group of friends who provide positive support. The strategies and coping skills learned during the program have proven invaluable, enabling the student to navigate difficult situations with resilience.

This story is a testament to the Alternative Suspension program's effectiveness and its ability to make a lasting impact on young people's lives.
