The IGA X-Press Kanwal has put the bounce back in the Lake Haven Y Brekkie and B-Ball Club, donating brand new basketballs to the popular youth program.
The IGA chipped in $874.76 for new equipment for the Y’s local Breakfast Program from the Community Chest, which has raised over $86 million to help local communities, charities and other worthwhile causes across the country.
Y Lake Haven Youth and Programs Coordinator Virginia Walshaw said the first thing she noticed when starting work with the Y late last year was the age of the equipment.
“I put a call out for help and the local IGA X-Press at Kanwal immediately came through,” she said.
“The kids were absolutely stoked when I told them.”
The Brekkie and B-Ball club has been running for over 10 years, sending local young people off to school with full bellies and a game of basketball. Last year alone, over 8,000 students participated in the program, averaging over 200 young people a week, 52 a day.
Luke Metcalfe, Store Manager of IGA X-Press Kanwal said the store were thrilled to chip in to another worthy local cause.
“IGA beneficiaries are chosen based on a range of criteria that include the charity’s level of engagement in the community, its promotion of health, fitness and wellbeing, and how much the activity adds value to the community, so the Y Breakfast Program is the perfect cause to support,” he said.
“When you purchase a product with the IGA’s Community Chest logo, you know a percentage is credited to that store’s IGA Community Chest account to benefit your local community.”
The Brekkie and B-Ball Club runs out of Council’s Lake Haven Rec Centre every term-time morning, Monday to Thursday, 6.30-8.30am. Virginia encourages parents and young people to check it out as the new school term begins.
“We offer free food, free hoops with our brand spanking new balls, and a free shoulder to whinge on for all young people in a safe, energised environment. With the help of our incredible volunteers, we set them up and motivate them for the challenges ahead. What better way to start the day?” she said.
