A program to support people experiencing mental health issues run at Lake Haven Recreation Centre has seen a record 53 people from around the Central Coast receive life changing assistance over the past year.
The YMCA’s Brightside program is designed to improve a person’s physical, social and mental health and encourage participation in exercise and a healthy lifestyle by offering free and unlimited access to the centre for 60 days, a customised exercise program and one-on-one support – in a mainstream, community-based environment.
Thanks to the Community Matching Fund grant of $21,000, more people were able to access this important service than ever in the past year.
Council’s Administrator, Mr Ian Reynolds, said this program is a great example of supporting the local community.
“It’s great to hear how the success of a small idea has developed to help so many people in our community,” Mr Reynolds said. “Council offers a number of grants to support and develop community programs such as the Brightside program.”
YMCA NSW CEO, Leisa Hart, said: “Almost half of all Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in their lifetime. The Y’s Brightside program offers opportunities for people with a mental illness to improve their physical, social and mental health and wellbeing in a mainstream environment, which removes the stigma of mental illness and involves them in their community.
“I’m delighted we were able to provide support to 53 people who needed it and sincerely thank Central Coast Council for their assistance through their Community Matching Fund.”
