Getting to know our people!
Dev is a teacher of swimming and water safety here at the Y.
During this time with us he drove the expansion of Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre’s (KFAC’s) adult swimming program beyond beginner level to include intermediate and advanced levels, bridging a gap between the Learn to Swim program and adult Swimfit squads.
He also incorporated adult clinics into his holiday intensive class timetable so that the Y’s “Action Break” is not just for children.
Dev plans his lessons weeks in advance to ensure he can incorporate lessons where he is in the water doing demonstrations and working with students to improve their skills. He understands that everyone can benefit from having an instructor in the water, no matter how competent you are at swimming.
Donna, who is one of his students, said nothing was too much for Dev. “Even if he has to repeat something until we have mastered it, he never seems to tire of our efforts and when we do succeed, he is there to celebrate our wins with us,” she said. “You can see he takes great pride in our accomplishments.”
Another student, Heather, decided to take swimming lessons with Dev after watching him teach her son. She created a “middle-aged mums” group who wanted to improve their technique. “The ability of Dev to communicate and explain how to do each stroke was amazing,” she said. “Our swimming has improved beyond belief. He would often go over time to help us all to improve and after a year of swimming, we all feel we have become Dev’s friend.”
